Transition to the Board

The Residential Tenancies Act (the RTA) came into effect on January 31, 2007.   The RTA sets the rules for most residential rental housing in Ontario.  The previous legislation, known as the Tenant Protection Act, (TPA) is no longer in effect.

The Landlord and Tenant Board’s role is to provide information about the RTA and to resolve disputes that arise out of the provisions in the RTA.  The Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal is now known as the Landlord and Tenant Board.

As of January 31, 2007:

  • All applications filed under the RTA are to be filed with the Landlord and Tenant Board.

  • All applications that were filed with the Tribunal prior to January 31, 2007, have become the responsibility of the Board.  This means that you will not have to re-file any documents you have already filed with the Tribunal, and if you need to file documents on an application filed under the TPA you can file them with the Board.

  • If a hearing date has been scheduled by the Tribunal, it will take place as scheduled.  If a hearing date was not scheduled by the Tribunal, the Board will schedule one.

  • All of the Tribunal’s office locations are now locations of the Board, and

  • The Tribunal’s telephone numbers and fax numbers are now those of the Board.
