Staff and members

This section contains information about our staff, Mediators and Members.  This section also provides links to additional topics related to our Mediators and Members.

Staff of the Board

The Board has Client Service Representatives that can provide information to the public about the rights and obligations of tenants and landlords under the Residential Tenancies Act and about the Board’s practices and procedures. Trained staff are available at designated Office Locations, or by phone at the telephone numbers listed in the Contact Information link.  Our staff can provide information only. They do not provide legal advice.

Mediators of the Board

The Board also has a team of Mediators.  They are available at most hearing locations and they can help landlords and tenants resolve their application by mutual agreement, rather than going before a Member who will decide the matter for them.

Members of the Board

A  Member of the Landlord and Tenant Board (the Board) is a decision maker (sometimes called an ‘adjudicator’).  If a landlord or a tenant files an application with the Board, a hearing will be scheduled before a Member.  At the hearing, landlords and tenants can talk to the Member about any matter that is relevant to the application.  The Member will review the facts and the sections of the law that apply and make a decision.

Landlords and tenants, or a representative for any of them, can only have contact with Members of the Board at an open hearing where all parties can be present.  This is to avoid any impression of preferential treatment.

Please refer to Rule 3 - Communications with the Board, in the Board's Rules of Practice for more information regarding this principle.

How Members are Appointed

Members are appointed to the Board by the Cabinet of the Ontario Government for a specific term or period of time. Members are usually appointed for a first term of 2 years.  At the end of this first term, Members may be reappointed for a second term of 3 years and, in some cases, a further third term of 5 years. Members have a variety of educational and work backgrounds in such fields as public service, teaching, law or business.

The head of the Board is called the Chair.  The Chair is assisted by seven Regional Vice Chairs and several Members.
